Lan Ying, auch bekannt durch seinen Höflichkeitsnamen Tianshu und literarischen Namen Diesou und Shitoutuo, wurde in Qiantang, Provinz Zhejiang geboren. Er war ein erfahrener Kunstmaler. Sein Stil war elegant und geschmeidig in seinen frühen Jahren, frei, groß, eigenartig und unophistisch in seiner Mitte, nachdem er weit um das Land gereist, und kräftig, robust, aber leicht sichtbar in seinen Senioren. Lan war auch gut in Malerei Figuren, Blumen, Vögel, Orchideen und Bambus. Er war ein wichtiger Exponent der „Wulin School of Painting“ (wulinpai).
