Die sehr große Kirche der Santa Maria Novella war die erste wichtige und unabhängige Kirche im wirklich italienischen Stil. Seine Konstruktion begann in etwa 1246 für die Dominikanische Ordnung. Die genauen Daten der verschiedenen Teile der Kirche sind immer noch umstritten, aber es dauerte sicherlich sehr lange, um es zu bauen. Das Schiff wurde erst 1279 begonnen, und die Fassade, begann 1310, war erst 1470 fertig. Dennoch machen das Innere und der Plan es zur wichtigsten Kirche seines Datums.
