Während der britischen Kampagne, um das östliche Maratha Land zu reduzieren, kam Chanda (heute bekannt als Chandrapur) als die größte Bastion in der Nagpur Region noch in Maratha Hände. Mit Mauern von mehr als 6 Meilen am Umfang lag sie nahe dem Zusammenfluss der Flüsse Erai und Zarpat. Am 21. Mai 1818 genehmigte Oberstleutnant William Adams einen besonders gewagten Plan, das Fort zu stürmen, das nur schwer ausgeführt wurde, da die Verteidiger gut vorbereitet waren. Die Festung wurde jedoch bald überwunden, und mit ihr hatten die Briten den effektiven Widerstand in den östlichen Regionen fast zerstört.
