Zirkulare Gemälde, oder Tondi, wurde in der fünfzehnten Jahrhundert Florenz, besonders in der häuslichen Sphäre populär. Sie haben sich vielleicht aus der Tradition der gemalten Geburtsschalen entwickelt, die verwendet wurden, um Geschenke an neue Mütter zu liefern. Tondi wurden häufig in Schlafzimmern, oft über Augenhöhe angezeigt. In dieser Arbeit führt ein Engel dem Säugling John der Täufer – einem Schutzheiligen von Florenz – zu seinem neugeborenen Cousin Jesus, der von seiner Mutter verehrt wird. Lorenzo hat sich auf religiöse Malereien spezialisiert und war ein fruchtbarer Anhänger von Girolamo Savonarola, einem mächtigen religiösen und politischen Reformer, dessen Predigt einen tiefen Einfluss auf die Kunst und Kultur von Florenz hatte.
