Verkleidet stilvoll in der Emulation von Mamluk Kriegern, die nach 1798 mit Napoleon aus Ägypten nach Paris kamen, schaltet dieser puckische Junge seine Spielzeuge eifersüchtig – auch wenn er die Möglichkeit einer Ball-Toss aushält. Die frühe Geschichte des Porträts bleibt unbekannt, ebenso wie die Identität des Kindes, obwohl die gut aufgenommene Innen- und Gesamtwirkung von spielerischem Verwöhnungspunkt auf aristokratische Herkunft. Obwohl Mamluk-Populationen in Paris am Rande des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts erweiterten, nahm die Aufnahme ihrer Kunst und Kultur in die französische Malerei oft die Form von exotischen Darstellungen wie diese, die frei gemischte authentische und vorgestellte Objekte.
