Lucas Cranach und seine Werkstatt produzierten viele gedruckte und bemalte Porträts von Martin Luther, mit denen der Künstler gut bekannt war. In diesem kleinen Panel wird der Reformer in der Nähe gezeigt, in drei Vierteln Profil, tragen die markanten schwarzen protestantischen Westen. Das Bild wurde wahrscheinlich mit einem Porträt von Philipp Melanchthon, einem Theologen, intellektuellen Führer der Reformation, und Luthers Hauptkollaboratorin verbunden. Mehrere überlebende Versionen zeigen, dass die Paarung eine breite Zirkulation genossen. Das gegenwärtige Gemälde, das eine gewisse Formelsteifigkeit zeigt, muss von Cranachs Werkstatt als Wiederholung betrachtet werden.
