Ab etwa 1900 begann Macdonald, neben ihrem Handwerk größere, unabhängige Aquarelle zu produzieren. Hier schläft eine Figur scheinbar ein und träumt vielleicht, während über ihr eine Reihe von acht Köpfen oder Masken steht, die vielleicht Teil ihres Traums sind. Das Thema mag von Maurice Maeterlincks Spiel The Blue Bird inspiriert worden sein, das im Herbst 1910 in Glasgow aufgeführt wurde. Auch stilistisch schuldet es viel der Arbeit von Aubrey Beardsley und dem niederländischen Künstler Jan Toorop, beide hatten eine große Auswirkung auf Glasgow-Künstler damals. Im Jahr 1912 stellte Macdonald die Arbeit neben zwei anderen Aquarellen in Edinburgh aus. Sie wurden sehr gut mit einem Rezenseur für The Glasgow Herald erhalten, weil sie “dekorativ exotische Phantasien, die als in einer anderen Sphäre geboren wurden”.
