Marin Vasilev (1867–1931), zusammen mit Boris Chatz und Zheko Spiridonov, gilt als einer der drei Gründer der Bildhauerkunst in der Nach-Liberation Bulgarien. Er absolvierte sein Studium an der Pädagogischen Schule in Shumen, bevor er 1896 in Skulptur von der Industrial School of Arts in Prag studierte. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Bulgarien wurde er 1899 Dozent und 1911 Professor an der Staatlichen Industrieschule der Künste in Sofia. Stark beeinflusst vom akademischen Realismus, er schuf Werke in der Sphäre der Porträts und der monumentalen Skulptur. Vasilev gilt auch als Schöpfer der Disziplin der dekorativen monumentalen und angewandten Skulptur in Bulgarien. Als Bildhauer-Dekorator war er für die Verzierung vieler öffentlicher Gebäude verantwortlich.
