Mather Brown wurde in Boston geboren, Sohn eines Uhrmachers und Abstammung von mehreren berühmten New England Göttinnen, einschließlich Baumwolle Mather und erhöhen Mather. Nachdem er als itineranter Portraitist in New England arbeitete, ging Brown 1780 nach London, um mit Benjamin West zu studieren. Er wurde ein modischer Porträtist in verschiedenen provinziellen englischen Städten. Das stilvoll gekleidete junge Mädchen blickt von ihrer Musik auf das Klavier, das das 1797 Label der Londoner Firma Kirkman trägt.
