Das Gemälde zeigt einen englischen Tee im Four-Mirror Salon des Palais du Temple in Paris im Jahre 1766. Die Salons, Orte der Gespräche in anspruchsvollen sozialen Kreisen in Paris und den Provinzen, spielten eine wichtige Rolle im Kulturleben des 18. Jahrhunderts. Künstlerische Unternehmungen, Dekorationsprobleme und literarische Bemühungen wurden alle Themen in den Salons. Es ist interessant festzustellen, dass der Begriff, der soziale Zusammenkünfte bezeichnete, auch auf die dominante Mode der künstlerischen Ausstellung, die berühmten Salons der Malerei angewendet wurde.
