Nachdem im Jahr 1896 ein Essay über die Arbeit von Edgar Degas in Pan Magazin veröffentlichte, ging Max Liebermann später in diesem Jahr, um ein Porträt für die gleiche Publikation zu erstellen, die den Dichter und Autor Theodor Fontane darstellte. Fontanes Gedichte wurden auch in Pan gezeigt, die von seinem Sohn Verlag in Berlin produziert wurde. Liebermann war fast 50, als er das Porträt schuf, sein Thema etwa 25 Jahre sein Senior. Dieses Büste-Portrait gibt eine Frontansicht von Fontane, die eine aufrechte Haltung und eine ziemlich schwere, offizielle Pose aufrechterhält – zweifellos fühlte der Künstler am besten geeignet für die Zwecke des Porträts.
