Im Jahre 1890 verließ Maxime Maufra eine Karriere im Geschäft, um unter der Leitung von Nantes Landschaftskünstler Leroux und Leduc zu malen. Im selben Jahr traf er mit seinem Freund Dezaunay (1854-1938) Gauguin in Pont-Aven. Im Jahre 1892 nahm er Unterkunft in Montmartre nicht weit vom Atelier von Eugene Delatre (1864-1938), der ihn zum Ätzen führte. Auf der Grundlage einer Zeichnung Maufra aus dem Jahr 1892 zeigt dieser Druck die felsige Küste von Porgastel in Le Pouldu, die von einem stürmischen Meer zerstreut wird, wobei eine besonders große Welle von links her nähert.
