Mr. und Mrs. Bradley Martin erhielten im Jahr 1897 die Berühmtheit für ihren üppigen Masqueradeball im Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Mr. Martin bekleidete sich als Louis XV, während Mrs. Martin als Mary, Königin der Schotten, in einem Kostüm mit einem Wert von über 400.000 Dollar vorzog. Diese Miniatur zeigt sie im extravaganten Ensemble, das Juwelen enthielt, die einmal Empress Josephine von Frankreich gehört hatten. Das Paar bedauerte die scheußliche Kritik, ein so auffällig übermäßiges Ereignis während einer Zeit der wirtschaftlichen Depression zu halten. Sie zogen nach England, um dem Skandal zu entkommen.
