Als Künstlerin wird Mei Qing am besten für seine Gemälde erinnert, und die dramatischen Variationen der Farbtonalität in dieser seltenen, rein kalligraphischen Arbeit zeigen eine malerische Sensibilität. Das Gedicht, das auch von Mei komponiert wird, bezieht die Freuden des Bootens am Abend mit einem Freund am Fluss Qinhuai in Nanjing und feiert das lebendige Nachtleben der Stadt, wie sich in der letzten Zeile widerspiegelt: „Die Flöte-Musik ist schwer zu widerstehen, wenn sie berauscht wird.“ Das Gedicht kann in den 1680er Jahren komponiert worden sein, als Mei seinen Freund besuchte, den berühmten Mönch-Künstler Shitao (1642–1707), in Nanjing.
