Van Mussher zeigt Witsen als Kniestück, den Kopf nach links, sitzend auf einem Stuhl, schauend. Verkleidet in einem Japonsche-Rock, mit einer langen Perücke, macht er eine sprechende Geste mit seiner rechten Hand. Auf dem Tisch eine orientalische Tischdecke und einen Brief, auf der rechten Seite im Hintergrund eine Erleichterung mit einer allegorischen Leistung von Amsterdam.
