Ein Schüler von Ramon Martí Alsina, Modest Urgell studierte unter Gustave Courbet in Paris. Seine Arbeit ist jedoch weit entfernt vom Realismus und in akademischen Kanonen verkündet Symbolismus. Dieses allegorische Gemälde, auf der Belagerung von Girona durch Napoleons Truppen, zeigt die verlassenen Stadtmauern von Girona und die Skyline der besiegten Stadt am Abendlicht. Der Flug eines Adlers ruft die imperiale Figur Napoleons hervor. Am Fuße der Mauer, die den Sturz der Stadt symbolisiert, wächst ein Laurelsklumpen als Zeichen des moralischen Siegs von Girona.
