Im Jahre 1883 startete William Morris sein ehrgeizigstes Projekt in der Textilgestaltung; eine Reihe von sanft fließenden Mustern inspiriert von Nebenflüssen der Themsen. Das Muster „Evenlode“ ist Teil dieser Serie, die auch „Cray“, „Kennet“, „Wey“, „Wandle“, „Windrush“ und „Medway“ umfasst. Diese Designs sind viel komplexer, dass seine früheren bedruckten Textilien und oft verschiedene Schichten von großen und kleinen Blumen und Stängeln enthalten. Morris hatte eine große Zuneigung für den Fluss Thames und genossen viele Bootsausflüge auf seinen zahlreichen Nebenflüssen. Er zog diese oft in seiner Lyrik wie in der Einführung Verse der
