Clemence Sophie Harned Lozier gründete die erste medizinische Schule für Frauen in New York. Lozier absolvierte Syrakus Medical College in 1853. 1863 eröffnete sie das New York Medical College und Hospital for Women in New York City. Frauen kamen aus der ganzen Welt, um mit ihr zu trainieren. Leider brauchten sie Polizei-Escorts, um ihre Kliniken im Bellevue Hospital zu besuchen, weil männliche Ärzte und medizinische Studenten schikanierten sie, wie sie ihren Weg dorthin gemacht. Ein Aktivist im Kampf um Frauenwahl, Lozier unterstützte auch Abschaffung und homöopathische Medizin
