Im Salon von 1848, Diaz ausgestellt ein Gemälde mit dem Titel Die Abreise von Diana für die Jagd, die für inept Zeichnung kritisiert wurde. Im darauffolgenden Jahr bemalte er dieses Bild, größer als das erste und zeichnete sich durch eine sorgfältige Zugänglichkeit und ein größeres Gefühl der Bewegung aus. Das klassische Thema und die hochschlüsselige Palette spiegeln das Interesse des Künstlers an den Werken von Correggio (1489–1534) und Prud"hon (1758–1823) wider.
