James VI von Schottland (1566–1625) war das einzige Kind von Mary, Königin der Schotten und ein Cousin zu Englands Elizabeth I, der Jungfrau Königin. Nach Elizabeths Tod stieg der schottische Erbe als James I auf den englischen Thron. Dieser reibungslose Übergang von England, Schottland und Irland zum ersten Mal als Großbritannien im Jahre 1603. König James bewahrte Elizabeths Hofmaler, Nicholas Hilliard, und beauftragte zahlreiche Porträts seiner Frau, Königin Anne von Dänemark, und ihre königlichen Kinder. James sah die Macht des Bildes für politische und diplomatische Zwecke, mit Miniaturen als Geschenke während der Friedensverhandlungen mit Spanien im Jahre 1604, und als Werkzeug für die strategische Ehe seiner Tochter Prinzessin Elizabeth (zukünftige Königin der Böhmen).
