Nicholaos Tzafouris war einer der vielen Ikonenmaler, die in der Stadt Candia (jetzt Iraklion) in Kreta arbeiteten, als Kreta unter der Kontrolle von Venedig war. Die Kombination von byzantinischen und lateinischen Elementen in vielen kretischen Ikonen wurde vor Ort und in Italien gut aufgenommen. Die griechische Inschrift auf dieser Ikone beschreibt einen byzantinischen Ikonentyp, in dem Soldaten Christus nach Golgotha ziehen. Das Bild hier ist jedoch in der Art westlich, wobei Christus das Kreuz nach Golgotha trägt. Der Soldat vor Christus trägt zeitgenössische italienische Rüstung, und die hinter ihm tragen Byzantinische oder kretische Rüstung.
