Ogata Kenzan lernte Töpferei vom großen Kyoto-Keramik-Künstler Nonomura Ninsei und eröffnete 1699 seinen eigenen Ofen. Mit Hilfe seines älteren Bruders Ogata Korin (1658-1716) fusionierte Kenzan die Welten der Keramik und Malerei, wodurch brillante Lebensmittelgefäße, die ein großes Lob erlangten. Als er siebzig Jahre alt war, verließ Kenzan sein Keramikstudio seinem adoptierten Sohn und begann, rein grafische Werke im Ernst zu malen. Diese Arbeit, Herbst Blumenbaskets, ist unter Kenzan
