Eine größere Variante der heutigen Komposition, in der die Hirten durch Figuren der Heiligen Franziskus und Maria Magdalen substituiert sind, befindet sich in der Doria Pamphili Galerie in Rom. Wie das Altarstück, das 1527 datiert ist, ist das gegenwärtige Gemälde ein spätes Werk. Die Landschaft wird von L"Ortolanos zeitgenössischen Dosso Dossi beeinflusst.
