Gemalt in Frankreich, wo Bruce von 1904 bis 1936 lebte, zeigt dieses Stillleben Schnittobst, ein Glas mit einem Stroh, blockartige Formen und eine architektonische Säule mit sauberen Linien, geometrische Klarheit und kühlen Tonalitäten. Das Gemälde strahlt eine rationale Stille aus, vor allem im Vergleich zu Cubist Stillleben von Pablo Picasso und Georges Braque. In der Tat, Objekte auf einem Tisch markiert eine bewusste und tiefgreifende Abkehr vom Kubismus, die negative Assoziationen während des Ersten Weltkriegs erlangte, weil seine Fragmentierung der Form schien, die tödliche Zerstörung des Konflikts zu visualisieren.
