Frühe Gelehrte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts identifizierten diesen Mann mit Mutton-Chop Sideburns als Cézanne selbst, aber er ist eigentlich der Knabenfreund Gustave Boyer, ein Anwalt, der für zwei andere Porträts um 1870–71 saß. Die malerische Oberfläche dieser Leinwand, die liberale Verwendung von schwarz und grau, und die mutig realisierten Formen sind typisch für Cézannes Arbeit damals.
