Cézanne verkündete einmal: "Mit einem Apfel will ich Paris verblüffen", und es gelang ihm, auch in seinen trügerisch einfachen Stillleben, zu blenden und zu begeistern. Als er sich an die provenzalischen Äpfel und Beurré Diel Birnen wuchs, die in der Nähe des Familiengutes bei Aix angebaut wurden, verzichtete er auf eine traditionelle Ein-Punkt-Perspektive und untersuchte die Früchte, Teller und Tische aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln – direkt oben und seitlich.
