Paul Cézanne produzierte mehr als 40 Gemälde seiner Frau, Hortense Fiquet, während ihrer rund drei Jahrzehnte zusammen. In der MFAH-Version fällt Hortense in ihrer Ebene auf. Cézanne versucht nicht, ihre Persönlichkeit oder ihren emotionalen Zustand zu erproben. Sein Hauptinteresse liegt vielmehr in der Beziehung der Formen. In Madame Cézanne in Blau schafft er subtile Spannungen zwischen Hortense
