Die gewöhnlichen Objekte in diesem trügerisch einfachen Stillleben erlauben Paul Cézanne, sich eine kompositorische Herausforderung zu stellen. Er kontrastiert die Rundheit der Früchte, die fast skulptural erscheinen, mit den flachen Blättern der Pflanze. Er lehnt auch die konventionelle Perspektive ab. Der Hintergrund, vielleicht die Rückseite einer ausgedehnten Leinwand, schließt unsere Sicht ab und schafft weitere räumliche Mehrdeutigkeit. Wir sind gezwungen, das Bild weniger als Stillleben und mehr als lebendiges Stück von Formen und Farben zu lesen.
