Art Nouveau war eine internationale Stilbewegung, die einen eigenen, aber typischen Ausdruck in jedem Land fand. Die Porzellanfabrik Rörstrand wurde für das skandinavische Jugendstil besonders wichtig. Hier wurden ab 1896 unkonventionelle, oft einzigartige Porzellanobjekte geschaffen, die auch 1900 auf der Weltmesse in Paris in großer Zahl ausgestellt wurden. Charakteristisch für die Jugendstil-Objekte in Rörstrand waren die skulpturale Formgebung des Porzellans oder die leicht reliefartige Formation von Dekorationen, die aus der Welt der Pflanzen und Blumen oder dem symbolischen Wasserthema, das für die Zeit um 1900 sehr typisch war, genommen wurden, wie in diesem Mittelstück in Form einer Wasserlilie.
