Die Miniaturmalerhalle gehörte zu einer Reihe schwedischer Porträtisten, die in Frankreich eine große Popularität genossen, die auf dem offiziellen Salon gezeigt und von der kulturellen und politischen Elite beschützt wurde. Der Sitter, Maurice, begann als Anwalt, bevor er selbst ein Porträtist wurde, der Kaiserin Catherine der Große (1729–1796) und Königin Marie Antoinette (1755–1793) unter seinen Unterstützern zählte. Dated 1772, diese Miniatur zeigt Maurice im offenen Kragen und einfache Kleidung, die seine neue Karriere als Künstler bekannt gegeben haben.
