Mary Cassatts Schwester Lydia war ein großer Teil ihres Lebens. Weder von ihnen, die heiraten wollen, lebten sie zusammen in Frankreich, bis Lydias Tod im Jahre 1882. Während sie lebte, benutzte Mary Lydia als Modell in vielen ihrer Gemälde, Der Teetasse war einer von ihnen. Dieses Gemälde ist eher ein Genre-Malerei als ein Portrait, da es einen sozialen Brauch darstellt, den Cassatt in ihren Gemälden oft revisitierte: die Einnahme einer Tasse Tee. Viele Kunstkritiker betrachteten das Gemälde als unvollendet, weil Cassatt kleine periphere Teile der Leinwand unbemalt gelassen hat.
