Neben einer Reihe von Gemälden von Reitern in südeuropäischen Landschaften genossen Phillips Wouwerman auch müde Jäger und Reisende an Rastplätzen zu malen. In dieser Malerei ist das Hauptthema ein satteltes weißes Pferd von einer Hütte. Ein Mann sitzt auf dem Boden und entleert eine Tasse. Im Hintergrund reitet ein roter Mann in Richtung der Dünen in der Ferne. Es ist kein Zufall, dass das weiße Pferd als Hauptthema in diesem Gemälde gezeigt wird. Mit dem heftigen Wettbewerb und dem oft bloßen Gewinn dieser Zeit war es für die niederländischen Maler wichtig, ein konsistentes und erkennbares Subjekt zu haben, das sie von ihren Wettbewerbern trennt. Philips Wouwerman benutzte oft ein weißes Pferd in seinen Gemälden als eine Form der Subjektsignatur.
