Ursprünglich aus Irland, Phoebe Anna Traquair ist als Schlüsselkünstlerin des keltischen Revivals in Schottland anerkannt, wo sie den größten Teil ihres Arbeitslebens verbrachte. Von den Pre-Raphaeliten und der Kunst- und Handwerksbewegung geprägt, bemalte sie Wandmalereien für mehrere Gebäude in Edinburgh. Sie war auch ein brillanter Sticker, aus exquisitem Emaille Schmuck und erstellte beleuchtete Handschriften. In diesem Selbstportrait tippt sie in die Tradition, sich als Künstlerin bei der Arbeit, in ihrem Smock und Kappe zu zeigen. Die subtile Dynamik ihrer Pinselstriche zeigt zusammen mit ihrem intensiven Blick etwas von der Energie, die sie ihrer vielseitigen künstlerischen Leistung widmet. Ihr Sohn, der das Portrait an die Nationalgalerien Schottlands überholt hatte, nannte es das „beste Portrait von ihr je gemacht“.
