Sauvages Name war synonym für Trompe l’oeil (fool the eye) Gemälde, die imitierte niedrige Relief antike Skulptur und wurde enorm populär für neoklassische Raumdekoration. Das gegenwärtige Gemälde soll Bronze nachahmen. Sauvage präsentierte auf dem Salon von 1781 eine etwas größere Version dieses Themas. Eine weitere Version ist auch bei The Met.
