Es wird gesagt, dass Simonetta Vespucci war eine der schönsten Frauen in Florenz in der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts. Sie war ein Modell für Botticelli. Obwohl das Porträt eine Ode der Schönheit ist, ist es auch eine posthume Hommage. Simonetta Vespucci starb vorzeitig, zwanzig Jahre alt, aus Tuberkulose. In Erinnerung an die junge Frau, nach ihrem Tod, Giuliano de Medici, Bruder von Lorenzo der Magnificent, beauftragte das Gemälde von Piero di Cosimo (1462-1521). Die Symbolik, die die Schlange darstellt, die den ewigen Lebenszyklus und die toten Bäume auf der einen Seite hervorruft, und die lebenden Bäume auf der anderen Seite, ruft das kurze Schicksal des Modells und des Lebenszyklus hervor.
