"Als Bonnard diese Sommerfrühstück-Szene malte, stand das Rockefeller Center halb gebaut und Europa rüstete sich für den Krieg. Doch die moderne Welt scheint in Bonnards Malerei ignoriert zu sein, die zurück zu den künstlerischen Tenets des späten 19. Jahrhunderts läutet, wobei ihre leuchtenden Farben die Leinwände und Theorien von Paul Gauguins Kreis hervorrufen. Um 1890 gehörte Bonnard zu den Nabis (aus dem hebräischen Wort für ""prophet"), einer Gruppe, die dazu neigte, mystische oder okkulte Szenen zu malen, um außergewöhnliche psychische Zustände zu rufen. Wie dieses Gemälde zeigt, gab Bonnard dem Alltag noch 40 Jahre später eine halluzinatorische Aura."
