Wie so viele andere Künstler des Tages Pieter Lastman ging nach Rom, als sein Studium abgeschlossen wurde. Hier traf er Künstler wie den deutschen Maler Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610). Inspiriert von Elsheimer, nahm Lastman die sogenannten Schrankstücke, kleine Gemälde an, die Szenen aus der Bibel, der Geschichte oder der Mythologie zeigen. Das Gemälde
