Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts wurde in Tallinn und Riga eine Vereinigung – die Bruderschaft der Blackheads – gegründet und bis 1940 weitergeführt. Es brachte unverheiratete Händler, Schiffseigner und Ausländer zusammen, die in Livonia aktiv waren (heute Estland und Lettland). Sie waren auch Kunstwerksammler. Die Snuffbox stammt aus ihrer Sammlung. Es wurde an der Piotr und Alexander Lukutin Fabrik in Russland in einer schwarzen Lacktechnik hergestellt.
