Bei Kilimanur beherbergten Ravi Varma und sein Bruder C. Raja Raja Varma eine große Sammlung von Kunstbüchern, Katalogen, Postkarten und Fotografien, akkumulierten während ihrer vielen Reisen und dienten als ständiges Quellmaterial. Bei Bedarf zögerte Ravi Varma nicht, westliche klassische Haltungen oder heroische Haltungen in seine eigenen Werke einzubeziehen. Es gibt vielleicht ein bekanntes Beispiel von Ravi Varma, das ein europäisches Gemälde in seiner Gesamtheit anstelle einer teilweisen Anpassung repliziert. Bei seinem Besuch in Baroda im Jahre 1888 hatte Ravi Varma Judith gesehen, von Benjamin Constant im Jahre 1886 gemalt.
