In dieser Malerei wandte Rembrandt seine Aufmerksamkeit auf das Thema des Alters, ein wiederkehrendes Thema in seiner Arbeit, die auch der Fokus einer großen Anzahl von Selbstporträts war. Die Identität der Figur im Gemälde ist jedoch unbekannt. Das reiche Kostüm, das er trägt, gibt keinen Hinweis auf den alten Mann.
