Der Mann ist wahrscheinlich Cornelis van Beresteyn (1586–1638), ein wohlhabender Burgomaster von Delft. Sein zurückhaltender Pose- und nüchterner Ausdruck steht im Gegensatz zu der Animation und Zugänglichkeit, die Rembrandt normalerweise den Mitgliedern der Amsterdamer Gesellschaft zugeschrieben hat. Zu der Zeit waren Porträts in Delft und in der benachbarten Hofstadt Den Haag bemerkenswert konservativ, an einer Tradition, die zurück zu spanischen königlichen Porträts der Mitte 1500er ging. Rembrandt ist bekannt, in Den Haag 1632 ein paar Porträts gemalt zu haben.
