Typisch für Rembrandts Inlandsion des alten Mythos, kann diese Darstellung der römischen Göttin des Krieges die niederländische Bereitschaft zum Konflikt während des Achtzigjährigen Krieges mit Spanien widerspiegeln. Anstatt eine idealisierte Quelle in der alten Skulptur zu erreichen, basiert Rembrandt seine Darstellung der Gottheit auf einer zeitgenössischen Frau. Die glitzernden Oberflächen von Bellonas Rüstung und furchteinflößender Schild erlaubten dem jungen Maler eine Bravura-Anzeige seiner Fähigkeiten zu geben.
