Kurz nach Rembrandts Ankunft in Amsterdam zeigt dieses gut erhaltene Porträt das Talent, das es dem jungen Künstler ermöglichte, schnell einen Namen für sich in der größten und künstlerisch wettbewerbsfähigsten Stadt der Niederlande zu machen. Das ovale Format war damals modisch, und die Leinenfalten des Mannes Ruff bot Rembrandt die Chance, seine Unterschrift kräftige Pinselarbeit zu zeigen. Nichts ist über die Identität des Mannes bekannt, und die Inschrift, die sein Alter als vierzig gibt, ist höchstwahrscheinlich von einer späteren Hand.
