Im Gegensatz zu vielen seiner ehrgeizigen Zeitgenossen reiste Rembrandt nie nach Italien. Nichtsdestotrotz wirkte sich die italienische Kunst tief auf ihn aus. In dieser Darstellung der römischen Göttin des Frühlings reagierte er insbesondere auf den venezianischen Meister Titian aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. Dennoch machen die nüchterne Färbung und die raue Farbgebung dieses Werk unverkennbar Rembrandts, und die Göttin kann teilweise auf einem Porträt seiner verstorbenen Frau Saskia basieren, die für viele seiner Gemälde die Inspiration war.
