Einmal bekannt als Rembrandt, wurde diese große Leinwand auch dem Meisterschüler Nicolaes Maes (1643–1693) und Abraham van Dijck (ca. 1635?–1680?) zugeschrieben. In Dordrecht, der südlichen niederländischen Stadt, aus der mehrere Rembrandt-Anhänger kamen, waren die beiden Künstler eng verbunden. Was auch immer seine Urheberschaft, das Gemälde muss von etwa 1655–60. Die Nähmaterialien und die Akt der Verklammerung Nägel vermuten häusliche Tugenden einer Art, die oft mit Witwe verbunden sind. Die monumentale Behandlung ist unerwartet und sicher inspiriert von Rembrandt.
