Der Buchhalter John Johnston (1781-1851) wurde in Barnboard Mill, Galloway, Schottland geboren und kam 1804 nach New York. 1817 heiratete er Margaret Taylor Howard und ihren Sohn John Taylor Johnston, später wurde er einer der Gründer des Metropolitan Museum of Art.
