Als er achtzehn war, malte Rembrandt Peale ein Porträt von Washington aus dem Leben in Gegenwart seines Vaters, Charles Willson Peale. Während des Rests seiner Karriere zeigte Rembrandt eine nahe Besessenheit mit Washington und replizierte dieses berühmte Portrait siebenundsiebzig Mal. Das steinerne Oval stammt aus der europäischen Mode des 17. Jahrhunderts für Tromp l"oeil Steinkisten, ein Format Peale kann während der Studienzeiten in Europa beobachtet haben.
