Diez, der Student von Schönberg war, schrieb in einem Brief, dass dies eines von zwei Porträts war, die Gerstl 1906 von ihm malte, fast sicher nachdem Diez in diesem Herbst von einer Sommerplatzierung in Rom zurückgekehrt war. Diez behauptet, dass das Porträt ursprünglich eine von Schönberg organisierte Kommission sein sollte, die Gerstl offenbar dazu bewog, die Arbeit unter seinem Kreis zu erhalten. Diez erinnert daran, dass die Arbeit in einem temporären Studio gemalt wurde, dessen Beschreibung mit einem über Café Sperl in der Gumpendorferstraße 11, Wien VI übereinstimmt, das damals von Gerstl besetzt sein könnte.
