Das wahre Thema dieses Gemäldes ist die Ausbreitung des Sonnenlichts in einem Dickicht von Bäumen, wo das einzige Fleckchen des Himmels als Reflexion im Strahl im Zentrum sichtbar ist. Es wurde in Pierrefitte skizziert, nur im Norden von Paris, im Jahr 1822, im selben Jahr Leprince machte sein öffentliches Debüt im Salon. Die Untersuchung der zufälligen Auswirkungen der Natur war ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der Entwicklung des Landschaftskünstlers. Leprinces erste Lehrer waren sein Vater, Anne-Pierre, und sein Bruder Auguste-Xavier (siehe 2003.42.40, auch im Blick).
