Es wurde 1860 von einem berühmten Foto von Garibaldi gemalt, dass Gustave Le Gray genommen hatte. In diesem gleichen Jahr hielt Letzteres in Palermo an, während er nach der Nachricht, dass die Stadt erobert worden war, nach Osten mit Alexandre Dumas reiste. Es war der „Liberator“ persönlich, Le Gray das Foto in Auftrag zu geben, das ein wahres patriotisches Ikone werden sollte. In dieser Leinwand führte Lo Forte eine Art „photogene Malerei“ durch, die ihn schon früher in Palermo berühmt gemacht hatte.
